Online-offline activities and game-playing behaviors of avatars in a massive multiplayer online role-playing game
Massive multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) are very popular in
China, which provides a potential platform for scientific research. We study
the online-offline activities of avatars in an MMORPG to understand their
game-playing behavior. The statistical analysis unveils that the active avatars
can be classified into three types. The avatars of the first type are owned by
game cheaters who go online and offline in preset time intervals with the
online duration distributions dominated by pulses. The second type of avatars
is characterized by a Weibull distribution in the online durations, which is
confirmed by statistical tests. The distributions of online durations of the
remaining individual avatars differ from the above two types and cannot be
described by a simple form. These findings have potential applications in the
game industry.Comment: 6 EPL pages including 10 eps figure
Division of labor, skill complementarity, and heterophily in socioeconomic networks
Constituents of complex systems interact with each other and self-organize to
form complex networks. Empirical results show that the link formation process
of many real networks follows either the global principle of popularity or the
local principle of similarity or a tradeoff between the two. In particular, it
has been shown that in social networks individuals exhibit significant
homophily when choosing their collaborators. We demonstrate, however, that in
populations in which there is a division of labor, skill complementarity is an
important factor in the formation of socioeconomic networks and an individual's
choice of collaborators is strongly affected by heterophily. We analyze 124
evolving virtual worlds of a popular "massively multiplayer online role-playing
game" (MMORPG) in which people belong to three different professions and are
allowed to work and interact with each other in a somewhat realistic manner. We
find evidence of heterophily in the formation of collaboration networks, where
people prefer to forge social ties with people who have professions different
from their own. We then construct an economic model to quantify the heterophily
by assuming that individuals in socioeconomic systems choose collaborators that
are of maximum utility. The results of model calibration confirm the presence
of heterophily. Both empirical analysis and model calibration show that the
heterophilous feature is persistent along the evolution of virtual worlds. We
also find that the degree of complementarity in virtual societies is positively
correlated with their economic output. Our work sheds new light on the
scientific research utility of virtual worlds for studying human behaviors in
complex socioeconomic systems.Comment: 14 Latex pages + 3 figure
Poor-Grade Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: Risk Factors Affecting Clinical Outcomes in Intracranial Aneurysm Patients in a Multi-Center Study
Objective: Patients with poor-grade aneurysm subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) have commonly been considered to have a poor prognosis. The objective of this study was to investigate the independent risk factors affecting clinical outcomes in intracranial aneurysm patients with poor-grade aneurysm subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) underwent different intervention therapies. Methods: A multicenter observational registry of 324 poor-grade aSAH patients treated at tertiary referral centers from October 2010 to March 2012 were enrolled in this study. The clinical data including patient characteristics on admission and during treatment course, treatment modality, aneurysm size and location, radiologic features, signs of cerebral herniation (dilated pupils), and functional neurologic outcome were collected. Clinical outcomes were assessed via a modified Rankin Scale at 12 months. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to develop prognostic models. The area under the receiver operator characteristic curves (AUC) and Hosmer-Lemeshow tests were used to assess discrimination and calibration. WAP score was developed to predict risk of poor outcome. Results: Older age, female gender, ventilated breathing status, non-reactive pupil response, pupil dilation, lower GCS score, a WFNS grade of V, intraventricular hemorrhage, a higher Fisher grade, a higher modified Fisher grade, and conservative treatment were calculated to be associated with a relatively poor outcome. Multivariate analyses revealed that older age, lower Glasgow coma scale score (GCS), the absence of pupillary reactivity, higher modified Fisher grade, and conservative treatment were independent predictors of poor outcome, showed good discrimination and calibration. Patients with WFNS grade V, older age and non-reactive pupillary reactivity were predicted to have a poor outcome by WAP risk score. Conclusions: A simple WAP risk score had good discrimination and calibration in the prediction of outcome. The risk score can be easily measured and may complement treatment decision-making
The safety and efficacy of carbon nanoparticle suspension injection versus indocyanine green tracer-guided lymph node dissection during radical gastrectomy (FUTURE-01): A single-center randomized controlled trial protocol
BackgroundThe use of lymph node (LN) tracers can help obtain a complete dissection of the lymph nodes and increase the detection rate of LNs and metastatic LNs. Carbon nanoparticle suspension injection (CNSI) and indocyanine green (ICG) have been widely used in radical gastrectomy in recent years. Nevertheless, the comparison of their clinical effects has not been studied.Method/designThe FUTURE-01 trial will be the first randomized, open-label, single-center trial to compare CNSI and ICG. The study started in 2021 and enrolled 96 patients according to a prior sample size calculation. The primary outcome is the number of LNs retrieved. The secondary outcomes are LN staining rate, LN metastasis rate, stained LN metastasis rate, perioperative recovery and survival.ConclusionBy comparing the safety and efficacy of CNSI and ICG tracer-guided LN dissection in patients with gastric cancer, we can determine the most appropriate LN tracer at present. With the help of LN tracers, the operation is simplified, and the prognosis of these patients is improved. Our study is a prospective exploration of the safety, efficacy, and prognosis of CNSI and ICG.Clinical trial registrationhttps://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT05229874?cond=NCT05229874&draw=2&rank=1, identifier NCT05229874
An emerging recombinant human enterovirus 71 responsible for the 2008 outbreak of Hand Foot and Mouth Disease in Fuyang city of China
Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD), a common contagious disease that usually affects children, is normally mild but can have life-threatening manifestations. It can be caused by enteroviruses, particularly Coxsackieviruses and human enterovirus 71 (HEV71) with highly variable clinical manifestations. In the spring of 2008, a large, unprecedented HFMD outbreak in Fuyang city of Anhui province in the central part of southeastern China resulted in a high aggregation of fatal cases. In this study, epidemiologic and clinical investigations, laboratory testing, and genetic analyses were performed to identify the causal pathogen of the outbreak. Of the 6,049 cases reported between 1 March and 9 May of 2008, 3023 (50%) were hospitalized, 353 (5.8%) were severe and 22 (0.36%) were fatal. HEV71 was confirmed as the etiological pathogen of the outbreak. Phylogenetic analyses of entire VP1 capsid protein sequence of 45 Fuyang HEV71 isolates showed that they belong to C4a cluster of the C4 subgenotype. In addition, genetic recombinations were found in the 3D region (RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, a major component of the viral replication complex of the genome) between the Fuyang HEV71 strain and Coxsackievirus A16 (CV-A16), resulting in a recombination virus. In conclusion, an emerging recombinant HEV71 was responsible for the HFMD outbreak in Fuyang City of China, 2008
Generation and Role of Oscillatory Contractions in Mouse Airway Smooth Muscle
Background/Aims: Tetraethylammonium chloride (TEA) induces oscillatory contractions in mouse airway smooth muscle (ASM); however, the generation and maintenance of oscillatory contractions and their role in ASM are unclear. Methods: In this study, oscillations of ASM contraction and intracellular Ca2+ were measured using force measuring and Ca2+ imaging technique, respectively. TEA, nifedipine, niflumic acid, acetylcholine chloride, lithium chloride, KB-R7943, ouabain, 2-Aminoethoxydiphenyl borate, thapsigargin, tetrodotoxin, and ryanodine were used to assess the mechanism of oscillatory contractions. Results: TEA induced depolarization, resulting in activation of L-type voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels (LVDCCs) and voltage-dependent Na+ (VNa) channels. The former mediated Ca2+ influx to trigger a contraction and the latter mediated Na+ entry to enhance the contraction via activating LVDCCs. Meanwhile, increased Ca2+-activated Cl- channels, inducing depolarization that resulted in contraction through LVDCCs. In addition, the contraction was enhanced by intracellular Ca2+ release from Ca2+ stores mediated by inositol (1,4,5)-trisphosphate receptors (IP3Rs). These pathways together produce the contractile phase of the oscillatory contractions. Furthermore, the increased Ca2+ activated the Na+-Ca2+ exchanger (NCX), which transferred Ca2+ out of and Na+ into the cells. The former induced relaxation and the latter activated Na+/K+-ATPase that induced hypopolarization to inactivate LVDCCs causing further relaxation. This can also explain the relaxant phase of the oscillatory contractions. Moreover, the depolarization induced by VNa channels and NCX might be greater than the hypopolarization caused by Na+/K+-ATPase alone, inducing LVDCC activation and resulting in further contraction. Conclusions: These data indicate that the TEA-induced oscillatory contractions were cooperatively produced by LVDCCs, VNa channels, Ca2+-activated Cl- channels, NCX, Na+/K+ ATPase, IP3Rs-mediated Ca2+ release, and extracellular Ca2+
Management of granulomatous lobular mastitis: an international multidisciplinary consensus (2021 edition)
Granulomatous lobular mastitis (GLM) is a rare and chronic benign inflammatory disease of the breast. Difficulties exist in the management of GLM for many front-line surgeons and medical specialists who care for patients with inflammatory disorders of the breast. This consensus is summarized to establish evidence-based recommendations for the management of GLM. Literature was reviewed using PubMed from January 1, 1971 to July 31, 2020. Sixty-six international experienced multidisciplinary experts from 11 countries or regions were invited to review the evidence. Levels of evidence were determined using the American College of Physicians grading system, and recommendations were discussed until consensus. Experts discussed and concluded 30 recommendations on historical definitions, etiology and predisposing factors, diagnosis criteria, treatment, clinical stages, relapse and recurrence of GLM. GLM was recommended as a widely accepted definition. In addition, this consensus introduced a new clinical stages and management algorithm for GLM to provide individual treatment strategies. In conclusion, diagnosis of GLM depends on a combination of history, clinical manifestations, imaging examinations, laboratory examinations and pathology. The approach to treatment of GLM should be applied according to the different clinical stage of GLM. This evidence-based consensus would be valuable to assist front-line surgeons and medical specialists in the optimal management of GLM.Improving the Ability of Diagnosis and Treatment of Difficult Disease
The draft genome of watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) and resequencing of 20 diverse accessions
Watermelon, Citrullus lanatus, is an important cucurbit crop grown throughout the world. Here we report a high-quality draft genome sequence of the east Asia watermelon cultivar 97103 (2n = 2
7 = 22) containing 23,440 predicted protein-coding genes. Comparative genomics analysis provided an evolutionary scenario for the origin of the 11 watermelon chromosomes derived from a 7-chromosome paleohexaploid eudicot ancestor. Resequencing of 20 watermelon accessions representing three different C. lanatus subspecies produced numerous haplotypes and identified the extent of genetic diversity and population structure of watermelon germplasm. Genomic regions that were preferentially selected during domestication were identified. Many disease-resistance genes were also found to be lost during domestication. In addition, integrative genomic and transcriptomic analyses yielded important insights into aspects of phloem-based vascular signaling in common between watermelon and cucumber and identified genes crucial to valuable fruit-quality traits, including sugar accumulation and citrulline metabolism
